MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team competed this afternoon before falling to two-time defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Austin Peay in an 8-0 loss at Skyhawk Field.
Before the game, UT Martin’s 10 seniors were honored as today was their final conference home game of their careers. Nine of the 10 seniors saw action today.
Offensively, the Skyhawks (10-37, 3-24 OVC) had seven of their nine starters hit safely this afternoon, led by Kyle Bargery’s 2-for-4 effort. Grant Glasser and Hagen Nelson also recorded a hit and a walk today for UT Martin.
“We had some opportunities in the middle of the game to tighten things up,” UT Martin head coach Bubba Cates said. “We had runners in scoring position throughout but we just couldn’t get the big hit.”
On the mound, Dalton Potts (4-6) fanned five but took the loss after allowing four earned runs over five frames. Seniors Trevor Lundgrin, Nick Wilson, Jordan Stokes and Isaac Armstrong also each made one-inning relief appearances this afternoon.
“It was good to get all of the seniors into the game,” Cates said. “We wanted to get everybody involved and that turned out to be the case.”
Austin Peay (38-13, 19-7 OVC) scored an unearned run in the first inning, then added one more run in the second and three in the third to take a 5-0 lead. UT Martin put a pair of runners on the basepaths in the bottom of the third but couldn’t get on the scoreboard.
Potts bounced back to hold the Governors scoreless in the fourth and fifth. Back-to-back two-out hits by Bargery (single) and Glasser (double) resulted in two men in scoring position in the Skyhawk fifth, but UT Martin couldn’t slice into its deficit.
Lundgrin held Austin Peay scoreless in the sixth and Wilson followed that with another shutout inning in the seventh to keep the score at 5-0. The Skyhawks once again pieced together a pair of hits in the seventh but couldn’t push across a run.
The Governors added three runs in the eighth to go ahead 8-0. UT Martin threatened in the bottom half of the eighth with two more hits but couldn’t generate a run.
Armstrong worked a scoreless ninth but the Skyhawks could not take advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning.
UT Martin will return to play on Tuesday, May 14 for its 2013 home finale. The Skyhawks will play host to Central Arkansas at 3 p.m.
