MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team looks to gain some ground in the Ohio Valley Conference standings this weekend when it takes on the Morehead State Eagles this weekend at Skyhawk Field. First pitch times for the series are set for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 and 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 21.

Since 2007, these two squads have played nine contests in Martin, with the Skyhawks holding a 5-4 edge. Recently, UT Martin has taken two out of three games against the Eagles in both 2007 and 2011 at Skyhawk Field.

The Skyhawks (10-26, 3-15 OVC) are coming off a tough 7-6 loss at Southern Illinois on Tuesday. In that game, UT Martin raced out of the gate with three runs in the top of the first, but the Salukis would reel off seven unanswered runs over the first five innings. The Skyhawks would tally three runs in the top of the seventh to get within striking distance but couldn’t get the big clutch hit the rest of the way.

A trio of sophomore southpaws are expected to start all three games on the hill this weekend for UT Martin, as Carter Smith (0-2, 6.48 ERA) is slated to pitch Game 1 with Taylor Cox (0-3, 6.50) and Dalton Potts (4-4, 5.31) to follow in Games 2 and 3, respectively. This will be the 10th appearance and second start of the season for Smith, who boasts a 2.40 ERA over his last four appearances (15 innings). Cox is coming off one of his best starts of the season (career-long seven innings, two earned runs) last Saturday at Eastern Kentucky, while Potts picked up his team-high fourth win after tossing six shutout innings last Sunday at Eastern Kentucky.

Morehead State (9-28, 4-11 OVC) enters the series on a 13-game losing streak, having not won since March 23. The Eagles have fallen on some hard luck during that span, losing five of those contests by two runs or less.

The Eagle offense is led by Kane Sweeney, who leads the team in seven major offensive categories and ranks second in the OVC in hits (51).

Sophomore right-hander Blake Smith (1-4, 4.68 ERA), junior lefty Noah Smallwood (0-4, 5.13) and freshman righty Matt Anderson (0-4, 5.54) have been announced as Morehead State’s probable starting pitchers for the series.
