MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team put the finishing touches on the 2013 season with a 7-0 victory over Tennessee State at the Skyhawk Varsity Courts on campus.
The match was the third in as many days for UT Martin, who fell 7-0 at Murray State on Friday and 5-2 at Belmont on Saturday. The Skyhawks end the season with a 6-14 mark and 5-5 Ohio Valley Conference record. Although UT Martin concluded its OVC slate with a fifth place finish, the Skyhawks lost out on a tiebreaker with Austin Peay and Belmont, just missing out on the six-team OVC Tournament.
“We’ve been consistently in the top of the conference for years and years and maybe this year was overdue,” Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. “It was the perfect storm of injuries and rainouts and we just couldn’t recover. I was pleased with our players – not once did we ever give up and I am proud of that. We have some great recruits coming in next year and I am confident that we will be back in the hunt in the OVC very soon.”
Before today’s match, Taylor honored seniors Anna Marie Herbold and Johanie Van Zyl. Both players wrapped up their stellar four-year careers with victories in both doubles and singles play this afternoon.
Herbold teamed with Simic to post their third straight win in No. 1 doubles, winning 8-0 over Shardel Suber and Attallah Eiland. Van Zyl and Katie McCall then tallied an 8-2 victory over Kryston Mason and London Thomas at No. 2.
Simic – who was coming off a big 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 win at Belmont in No. 1 singles – won again at No. 1 today, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Suber. Herbold – who also posted a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at Belmont at No. 2 singles on Saturday – went out on top with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Eiland at No. 2.
Van Zyl also went out on top with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mason at No. 3. Jessica Silva rounded out the Skyhawks’ victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Thomas.
