MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will look to climb up the Ohio Valley Conference standings this weekend when it travels to Eastern Kentucky for a three-game set at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch times for the series are set for 2 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 and noon on Sunday, April 14. All times listed are CST.
The Skyhawks have won each of their last four games in Richmond, winning the final game of the series in 2009 and sweeping the series in 2011. Overall, UT Martin has captured victories in seven of the last 11 games against the Colonels.
UT Martin (9-23, 2-13 OVC) is coming off a 10-3 midweek loss at No. 2 Vanderbilt. In that game, the Skyhawks traded punches with the Southeastern Conference powerhouse through three-and-a-half innings before the Commodores scored eight of the final nine runs of the game.
On the season, the Skyhawks are led offensively by seniors Byron Johann (eighth in the OVC with a .347 batting average, 10th with a .510 slugging percentage) and Wade Collins (third in the OVC with 12 doubles, team-highs of three homers and 25 RBI’s). Grant Glasser also hits .301 while Matt Haynes (.298) is also hovering amongst the .300 mark on the season.
Senior right-hander Dan Tobik (1-4, 4.71 ERA) will make the start for UT Martin in Game 1 of the series, followed by sophomore southpaws Taylor Cox (0-3, 7.45) and Dalton Potts (3-4, 6.23) in Games 2 and 3, respectively. Tobik ranks third in the league in strikeouts per nine innings (10.29), while Cox is fourth in the OVC in strikeouts looking (15) and Potts is tied for the team lead in victories.
Eastern Kentucky (9-20, 5-7 OVC) saw a four-game winning streak end with a 10-3 loss at Ohio on Wednesday. The Colonels swept Morehead State on the road last weekend, outscoring the Eagles by a 53-24 margin - including a 30-14 win in the finale.
The Colonel offense is paced by Sean Hagen, who ranks seventh in the OVC in batting average (.347). Shaun Ball is the only Colonel to have started all 29 games and he leads the team with six homers and 23 RBI’s.
Eastern Kentucky has announced Brent Cobb (2-5, 5.93 ERA), Ben Gullo (1-2, 3.24) and Shane Grimm (3-3, 6.81) as its probable starting pitchers.
