CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team improved to 2-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play with a 5-2 triumph over Southeast Missouri at the Redhawks Tennis Complex this afternoon.
UT Martin (3-10 overall) earned the doubles point by coming out on top of a couple close decisions. At No. 1, Ivon Simic and Anna Marie Herbold tallied an 8-6 victory, while Johanie Van Zyl and Katie McCall compiled a 9-8 win at No. 2. The Skyhawks won at No. 3 by default.
The Skyhawks kept rolling in singles play, accounting for wins at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 (by default). Simic chalked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1, while Van Zyl downed Sarah Uptmor by a 6-2, 6-0 margin at No. 4. Jessica Silva came away with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 to complete UT Martin’s victory.
“We are still alive and have an opportunity to make the OVC Tournament,” Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. “That’s one of our goals and if we can do that, we’ll see what happens from there.”
UT Martin returns to the court on Thursday, April 4 when it faces Jacksonville State. The match – which is a designated home match for the Skyhawks – will be played at the Centennial Tennis Center in Nashville at 2 p.m.
