CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Junior Jemima Potter generated her first singles victory of the spring this afternoon but it wasn’t enough as Chattanooga defeated the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad by a 6-1 margin at the Manker-Patten Tennis Center.
Potter competed at No. 2 singles for the fifth consecutive match to start the spring season. After a 6-2 setback in the opening set, the Northampton, England native turned away Delaney Edwards by a 7-6 (5) margin in the second set before Edwards was forced to retire from the match.
However, Potter’s triumph would be the only head-to-head victory for the Skyhawks on the day as the Mocs improved to 4-1 on the season.
In doubles, Asel Jumamukhambetova teamed with Potter at No. 1 but Chattanooga claimed a 6-1 win. Amelia Campbell and Andrea Plantada also fell by a 6-1 margin at No. 3 before Jule Streif and Mizuki Sakurai competed throughout in a 6-3 setback at No. 2.
Streif battled through a 6-2, 6-2 loss at No. 3 singles while Campbell fell by a 6-0, 6-3 margin at No. 4. Elina Geut put forth a valiant effort at No. 5 before falling 7-5, 6-0 while Jumamukhambetova was defeated 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. Olha Burak rounded out the singles results as she dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 6.
UT Martin is off from official competition for the next three weeks before its annual Spring Break through the southern portion of the United States. The Skyhawks will visit Samford (March 5), UAB (March 7), Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State (March 9) and Alabama (March 10) in the span of six days.
