The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look stay hot as of late with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State on Saturday, Jan. 13. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. and serves as the front end of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men.
The Skyhawks (7-10, 3-2 OVC) are hoping to lean on its home court advantage and close out the team’s homestand on a positive note by stringing together its first winning streak of the season after winning back-to-back league contests against Murray State and Eastern Kentucky. In the team’s most recent outing, the Skyhawks posted a number of runs while holding the visiting Colonels to just 29 percent shooting from the floor en route to a 77-49 victory.
UT Martin used the contest to showcase its balance throughout the lineup as five players scored in double figures for the first time this season. The team’s leading scorer in sophomore Kendall Spray paced the team offensively for the eight time, tallying 18 points in the win over EKU. Joining in the action was the quartet of Emanye Robertson (16 points), Janekia Mason (13 points), Ashton Feldhaus (12 points) and Chelsey Perry (10 points) who all eclipsed double-digits in the scoring column.
Morehead State (12-6, 3-2 OVC) enters the contest after a big road win at Southeast Missouri on Thursday night where senior forward Eriel McKee sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 59-56 victory. The Eagles boast one of the league’s most balanced lineups, featuring five players who average in double figures led by Miranda Crockett with 14.9 points per game. Darianne Seward (13.4 ppg), Tierra McGowan (12.4 ppg), McKee (12.2 ppg) and Erin Blaine (10.1) rounds out the explosive group.
Saturday’s game marks the 48th meeting between the two programs in series history with Morehead State holding a narrow 25-22 advantage. The Eagles would snap a seven game losing streak to the Skyhawks last season in the Elam Center, coming out victorious 89-68. Despite last season’s loss, UT Martin has won seven of the last eight against Morehead State dating back to the 2010-11 season.
