The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will look to build upon its recent momentum with a trip to the Show Me State to take on Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 4. Kickoff from Houck Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Skyhawks (4-4, 2-3 OVC) enter the contest having recently snapped a season-long three-game losing streak with a 27-10 victory over Eastern Illinois their last time out. UT Martin saw every component of the team provide valuable contributions as the squad scored a pair of passing touchdowns, two field goal and a fumble return for a touchdown to secure the victory. The game marked the first time this season in which the Skyhawks scored in very quarter. In addition to the team’s balanced scoring attack, the defense once again proved gritty, tallying five turnovers – including a fumble recovery and four interceptions.
UT Martin currently ranks in the top-two in the OVC in 12 team categories including opponent first downs (15.2), opponent third down defense (27.6 percent), opponent fourth down defense (20.0 percent), redzone defense (64.0 percent), punt return average (15.4 ypg), time of possession (32:00), on-side kicks (50.0 percent), scoring defense (16.9 ppg), total defense (279.0 ypg), pass defense (181.5 ypg), rushing defense (97.5 ypg) and kickoff returns (27.2 ypg).
The game marks a matchup of two of the league’s veteran coaches in UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson and Southeast Missouri’s Tom Matukewicz. Simpson recently moved into a tie for seventh place on the OVC’s conference-only wins leaderboard with a victory against Eastern Illinois. He enters the contest with a 76-58 overall record and a 59-35 mark in OVC play in 12 seasons. Meanwhile, Matukewicz owns a 15-28 career mark in four seasons leading the Redhawks.
Southeast Missouri (2-6, 2-3) recently took No. 3 ranked Jacksonville State to the brink before ultimately falling 23-7 as the Gamecocks scored the final 16 points of the contest down the stretch. In the contest, the league’s leader in team sacks tallied eight sacks, serving as a team high since the 2015 season.
The Redhawks are led offensively by senior quarterback Jesse Hosket who leads the OVC in completions (149-of-285) and touchdown passes (12) while ranking amongst league leaders with 1,611 yards. Omar Pierre-Louis leads the defense with 55 tackles and three interceptions while Zach Hall has notched 50 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and a team-high six sacks.
Saturday’s game serves as the 33rd meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a narrow 16-14 advantage. The Skyhawks have won five of the last six meetings with Southeast Missouri’s lone victory coming as the road team on Sept. 20, 2014. Dating back to 2008, each contest has been decided by 10 points or fewer except for last season’s 24-10 final result.
