BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team overcame a 17-shot deficit today to whip up a two-stroke victory at the Samford Intercollegiate for the Skyhawks’ third consecutive tournament win (884, +20).

UT Martin jumped two spots in the team standings after carding an even-par 288 today to top the 10-team field. The 288 in today’s third round was seven shots better than any other team in the tournament as the Skyhawks climbed over Tennessee Tech (886, +22) and Auburn (889, +25).

“Every single player improved their score today,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We had a serious meeting last night and I just told the team to come out, play hard and we will see what happens. We were head-to-head with Auburn in the last nine holes and our last four or five holes really made the difference. I am very pleased with all of our players – it was a great team effort today.”

The Skyhawks produced the top two finishers in the 58-man field, led by Hunter Richardson’s third win this season and the 11th medalist honor of his storied career. The senior out of Clarksville, Tenn. won the event by a commanding six shots – shooting a 69 today to finish at 209 (-7). Richardson had four birdies and 13 pars today on his way to a runaway victory – completing the 54-hole tournament with an eagle, nine birdies, 40 pars and just four bogeys.

Sophomore Jack Story generated the best finish of his collegiate career today, earning runner-up honors with a 215 (-1). He posted a 70 this morning, posting three birdies and an eagle in a six-hole stretch at one point.

Nick Wolf claimed his best score of the tournament today, shooting a 74 with a pair of birdies to finish with an overall tally of 227 (+11). Ross Redmont also saved his best tournament performance for the third round, producing three birdies as his 75 resulted in a final score of 235 (+19). Cameron Smith accounted for a 77 today to finish with a 241 (+25) for the tournament.

UT Martin puts its three-tournament winning streak on the line next week when it wraps up the fall schedule at the MTSU Intercollegiate on Monday, Oct. 30.
