MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle squad climbed up in the national rankings to No. 17 after an eventful weekend with stops at Jacksonville State, North Georgia and Georgia Military College.

UT Martin started off the road trip at Jacksonville State as the Skyhawks came within just four points of a program record for the mixed team aggregate by shooting a score of 4,622. The previous mark was 4,626 set on Feb. 22, 2014. Kaitlin Korinek compiled a smallbore score of 586, setting a school record in the discipline. Korinek and Joe Martin both fired an air rifle score of 588 as the tandem led the way for the impressive outing.

Several other Skyhawks set or tied career highs at Jacksonville State. Curcio matched her high in smallbore (571) while Andre Delcalzo (566) and Celia Gelpey (556) set new highs in smallbore. Martin tied his career high in air rifle (588) while Jacob Osborne (564) and Sean Phillips (548) set new highs in the discipline.

At Jacksonville State, mixed team members Korinek (586), Martin (574), Brigitte Curcio (571), Alex Tamboli (562) and Jennifer Plocinik (542) all chipped in for a team smallbore score of 2,293. Martin (588), Korinek (588), Curcio (5749), Plocinik (574) and Alex Bapties (570) shot for an air rifle score of 2,329 for the mixed team. The women’s team put together an air rifle score of 2262 as Brianna Sawyers (569), Kalen Royal (568), Ashley Coots (567) and Celia Gelpey (558) all competed. 

UT Martin then traveled to take on North Georgia and Clemson. The Skyhawks fired a mixed team aggregate score of 4,610 for the second highest total of the year, to edge out North Georgia’s 4,601. Martin led the way by setting a career high in air rifle with a score of 589, just one day removed from setting his previous high. Korinek (588), Plocinik (579), Coots (565), Bapties (561), Gelpey (553), Sawyers (585), Curcio (580), Tamboli (570), Royal (556) and Osborne (548) all competed in air rifle. Martin (576), Korinek (575), Tamboli (567), Sawyers (559), Gelpey (559), Bapties (558), Curcio (556), Coots (551), Plocinik (548), Delcalzo (548) and Phillips (546) all fired in smallbore.

Both Martin (589) and Gelpey (559) set career highs in smallbore and air rifle, respectively, while at North Georgia.

The Skyhawks wrapped up the weekend with an air rifle friendly at Georgia Military College. Tamboli (575) set a career high in the discipline to round out the road swing.

“We had a very good weekend,” said UT Martin head coach MJ Vowell. “We had several people set personal bests with one individual setting a school record as well as coming within four points of the program aggregate record. I am very proud of what the student athletes did. They stayed the course as we were on the road for four days with three matches total over the weekend.“

UT Martin returns to action Saturday, Oct. 21 as it travels to Murray, Ky. to take on UTEP.
