DICKSON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team rose to the challenge during today’s final round at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, defeating Missouri State in a sudden death playoff to claim its second straight tournament championship.

The Skyhawks and Missouri State were tied at the conclusion of today’s final round, as the two teams headed out to the par-4, 430-yard Hole No. 10 for the first of four possible playoff holes to determine a sole victor. Due to a withdrawal earlier in the day, UT Martin had no wiggle room in playoff scoring while Missouri State had five golfers to use the four best scores.

After each Skyhawk parred the 10th hole earlier in the day, Cameron Smith and Jack Story each carded a birdie while Hunter Richardson and Nick Wolf both parred the hole for a team score of 14 (-2) in the tiebreaker. Missouri State produced a birdie, two pars, a bogey and a double bogey for a tally of 16 (E) and moments later, UT Martin was officially crowned as the team champion.

“This is such a special win for us to play with just four guys in the playoff,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “I told our guys to just hang in there – we had as good of a chance to win as anybody. All four of our players today played a solid round of golf today and I am just so proud of each and every one of them. For us to come out on top the way we did, it just shows you what kind of players we have. It’s almost too good to be true.”

As a team, UT Martin shot a 289 (+1) today, capping off the three-round tournament with an 873 (+9). The Skyhawks led the 11-team field in par-4 scoring (4.07, +10) and eagles (two) while tallying 10 birdies as a team today.

Richardson’s 68 today was the best score in the 74-man field, as he finished the tournament in third place (212, -4) – two shots behind the individual medalist. He paced the event in par-4 scoring (3.87, -4) while accumulating a team-best 12 birdies for UT Martin, also adding an eagle on the par-5, 515-yard Hole No. 9 today.

Story and Smith each shot a 73 (+1) today for the Skyhawks while Wolf’s 75 concluded the team scoring as Ross Redmont was forced to withdraw after his seventh hole with an illness.

Overall, Wolf placed 19th in the tournament with a 222 (+6), leading the field with 40 pars in 54 holes. Story (225, +9) and Smith (226, +10) finished just one stroke apart.

The freshman duo of Ryan Davis and Tate Chumley also wrapped up successful tournaments as individuals. Davis posted five birdies today during an even-round 72 while Chumley carded a 75 (+3). Davis tied for 19th place overall with a 222 (+6) while Chumley followed closely behind with a 224 (+8).

UT Martin will go for its third straight tournament victory next week when it travels to Birmingham, Ala. for the Samford Intercollegiate on Oct. 23-24.
