TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –
Serving as the team’s final tune-up before the Ohio Valley Conference Championships later in the month, the University of Tennessee at Martin cross country squads notched yet another strong progression on the season at the Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama on Friday morning.

The Skyhawks concluded the regular season portion of the 2017 schedule by competing at the Crimson Classic at Harry Pritchett Running Park in Tuscaloosa. Facing off against some of the region’s best, UT Martin competed against both nationally and regionally ranked squads.

Highlighting the No. 14 regionally ranked men’s squad in the 8k event was the performance of sophomore Edwin Kurgat who posted a fifth place finish with a time of 23:50.2 which ranks as the second-fastest time in program history. His time also ranked nearly 70 seconds faster than his performance in the same meet a season ago.

Joining in the action was sophomore Ryan Ford who placed 28th overall with a time of 25:20.9 while freshman Brian Chelide’s time of 25:28.8 earned another top-50 finish for the squad. Meanwhile, freshmen Andrew Dodson (26:15.3) and Luke McNair (27:13.0) posted strong showings. As a team, UT Martin finished ninth overall out of 25 Division I universities.

On the women’s side, the Skyhawks saw a step up in distance as the squad competed in the 6k event. Highlighting the squad was sophomore Kara Martin who paced the Skyhawks with a time of 21:36.0 while junior Nelly Kandie posted a huge personal record with a time of 21:59.2.

Another big PR came from junior Amelia Martin who finished with a time of 21:59.5 while Sydney Larkin crossed at 23:05.4. As a team, UT Martin finished 13th overall out of 30 Division I universities.

“The ladies really stepped up today,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “We’ve got a few more areas to improve upon, but overall, this was a great indication of where we are after a major training block. For the men, this was another strong team run. The freshmen pack of Daniel (Smith), Andrew, Luke and Tim (Dye) are starting to turn the corner on executing a full race over the entire 8k college distance.”

UT Martin will now shift its focus to preparing for the OVC Cross Country Championships hosted by Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 28.
