SKYHAWK EQUESTRIAN LEAPS INTO NCEA TOP-10 NATIONAL RANKINGS
October 10, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. – Following an impressive showing against a pair of nationally ranked opponents last weekend, the University of Tennessee at Martin entered the National Collegiate Equestrian Association national polls at No. 10 today.
Today’s announcement marks the first time that the Skyhawks have appeared in the NCEA’s top-10 rankings since Nov. 3, 2015. Overall, it is the 10th time that UT Martin has been nationally ranked since the weekly polls began in 2012-13.
The Skyhawks have more than held their own against stout competition to begin the 2017-18 season, squaring off against three nationally ranked foes.
UT Martin started the season with a narrow 13-7 home loss against No. 3 Auburn, defeating the Tigers in equitation on the flat on Sept. 22.
This past weekend, the Skyhawks made the trek to Delaware where they nearly came away with a sweep over two top-10 squads. On Friday, UT Martin boasted three of the four MOP’s before coming up just short by an 8-7 margin against No. 8 TCU. The Skyhawks quickly rebounded with a big 9-6 victory the next day against No. 10 Delaware State, winning three point in each of the equitation over fences, horsemanship and reining categories.
On the season, UT Martin has produced a balanced scoring attack. Four different Skyhawks have tallied a team point in equitation on the flat, led by two points apiece out of Randi LaChance and Monika Zoromski. Four UT Martin riders have also secured a team point in equitation over fences, as the trio of Abbie Hopkins, LaChance and Zoromski lead the way with two points. In horsemanship, Tess Baumann’s two points pace four Skyhawks who have pitched in with team points. Liana Nowak and Madeline Williams (two points each) lead a trio of scorers in reining.
A trio of underclassmen have claimed all five of UT Martin’s MOP accolades so far in 2017-18. Sophomore LaChance posted top honors in equitation on the flat against No. 8 TCU while the freshman duo of Hopkins (equitation over fences) and Baumann (horsemanship) each garnered MOP’s in back-to-back competitions against No. 8 TCU and No. 10 Delaware State.
The No. 10 Skyhawks are back in action this Friday, Oct. 13 when they travel for an exhibition against Miami (Ohio).
