FELTON, Del. – One day after the University of Tennessee at Martin’s Hunt Seat riders helped carry the team to a near-upset of No. 8 TCU, the Western riders took six of eight points to lift the Skyhawks to a big 9-6 triumph over No. 10 Delaware State.

UT Martin took three of four points in both Western events (horsemanship, reining) as well as in equitation over fences. As a direct result, the Skyhawks came away with their first win of the 2017-18 season.

In equitation on the flat, Abbie Hopkins’ 80 points tied Delaware State’s Erin Gordon but the host Hornets was able to secure the remaining three points.

Hopkins answered right back with an MOP performance in equitation over fences, garnering 87 points. Randi LaChance (88 points) and Monika Zoromski (83 points) also clinched team points while Lindsay Anderson put together a strong 84-point ride.

Tess Baumann led the way in horsemanship, compiling a 74-point effort which led to MOP honors. Devon Woods and Bobbie Piddock produced 72 and 71 points, respectively, to pace UT Martin to team points.

In reining, the Skyhawk trio of Noel Meadows, Liana Nowak and Madeline Williams each accumulated team points with identical 69.5 scores. Megan Aiosa’s 70-point performance was just one team point shy of another head-to-head win and team sweep for UT Martin.

The Skyhawks go back on the road for an exhibition competition at Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Oct. 13. UT Martin then rounds out its fall schedule with the Skyhawk Invitational on Nov. 9-10, hosting SMU, Delaware State and Fresno State in the two-day, four-team event at Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
