BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin sophomore cross country athlete Edwin Kurgat continues to rack up individual honors as he notched his third adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Male Runner of the Week accolade in as many races after yet another record setting performance at the Greater Louisville Classic this past weekend.
Kurgat has not only rewritten the UT Martin record books in just parts of two years, he has garnered unparalleled success in the program’s history. After the men’s cross country program notched just four OVC Male Runner of the Week honors since joining the league in 1992 prior to this season, Kurgat has already tallied three recognitions – along with being named National Division I Men’s Cross Country HERO of the Week – this season alone. During his time at UT Martin, he has paced the Skyhawks in every race while setting five of the top six times in school history.
A native of Eldoret, Kenya, Kurgat returned to his record-setting pace with a ninth place finish out of 278 Division I individuals which included seven nationally and 13 regionally-ranked schools at the Greater Louisville Classic. With a loaded field of competitors, he posted an 8k time of 23:40.96 which ranks as the top time in the OVC this season. His time shattered his previous school record which he set two weeks ago by 19 seconds. The performance helped proper the men’s squad into this week’s regional rankings at No. 14.
Kurgat and the Skyhawks will return to action in their final tune-up before the OVC Championships with an appearance at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Friday, Oct. 13.
