UT MARTIN RODEO TEAMS EACH PLACE FOURTH AT WEST ALABAMA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Both University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo squads came in fourth place in the team standings this weekend at their third rodeo of the season, hosted by the University of West Alabama.
The UT Martin men’s team piled up 380 points while the women’s squad earned 200 points over the three-day event. Missouri Valley College claimed the top spot in both the men’s (670) and women’s (510) standings.
Jonny Walker excelled in bareback riding, finishing second in all three phases of the event. The junior out of Wildersville, Tenn. put together a score of 74 in the first round before securing a 70 in the short go on his way to a 144 average.
Three UT Martin cowboys picked up points in calf roping. Chase Thrasher boasted the top time in the short go (8.8 seconds) and the third-best average (21.1) in the event. Colt Matthews also scored in the short round (9.4 seconds, third) and in average (21.2, fourth) while Hunter Styles placed sixth in the opening round with a time of 11.1 seconds.
In breakaway roping, Alexandra Lyle finished third in the opening round (3.1) and sixth in both the short go (13.2) and in average (16.3).
The UT Martin duo of Cord Barricklow and Styles tallied points in steer wrestling. Barricklow’s 7.2 seconds in the opening round placed third while he finished sixth in the short go (14.7) and in average (21.9). Styles’ 7.7 seconds in the first round was good enough for sixth place.
Four UT Martin cowboys representing three different teams accounted for points in team roping. Patrick Houchins joined forces with East Mississippi’s Jake Wells to tally high finishes in average (21.6, third), in the short go (13.6, third) and in the opening round (8.0, fifth). The all-UT Martin team of Robbie Van Holten and Styles also recorded points in all three phases, finishing fourth in average (21.7), fourth in the short go (13.7) and sixth in the first round (8.0). Craig Parks also teamed with Southern Arkansas’ Tanner Turner to rank third in the opening round with a time of 7.9 seconds.
In barrel racing, Ashley Brooks and Kenzley Wilson each performed well for UT Martin. Brooks came in second in average (34.12) while also placing third in both the first round (16.84) and in the second round (17.28). Meanwhile, Wilson also accumulated points in all three phases as she placed fourth in the short round (17.3), fifth in average (34.36) and fifth in the opening go (17.06).
Ryan McDaniel put forth a strong effort in bull riding, as the junior from Yuma, Tenn. was one of only four cowboys to accrue points. His 79 first-round points were the highest in the field and carried over to a second-place result in average.
UT Martin takes next week off from official competition before returning to action at a rodeo hosted by Murray State on Oct. 12-14.
