MARTIN, Tenn. – In a battle between two of the three unbeaten teams in Ohio Valley Conference play, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end today as the Austin Peay Governors posted a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
UT Martin (9-8, 3-1 OVC) placed three in double-digits in the kill column, as Megan Fair (12), Jemima Idemudia (10) and Macy Reigelsperger (10) each accomplished that feat. Kenzie Hinshaw registered 21 assists for an offense that hit .221 while Brooke Gyori (11 digs) and Idemudia (four blocks) headed the Skyhawks’ defensive attack.
The first set started off well for UT Martin, as Fair and Idemudia slammed down kills to give the Skyhawks a lead. Austin Peay (16-2, 4-0 OVC) then took a 7-4 advantage before Reigelsperger dialed up three kills in the span of four points to even the score at 10-all. Another Reigelsperger kill put UT Martin on top by a 14-13 margin but ultimately that was the final lead of the set for the Skyhawks. An assisted block by Idemudia and Justine Walker trimmed UT Martin’s deficit to 22-19 but the Governors secured the final three points of the set.
Reigelsperger accounted nearly half (five) of the Skyhawks’ 12 kills in the opening set.
Austin Peay scored the first three points of the second set but back-to-back kills by Fair and Idemudia helped UT Martin close the gap to 9-8. The Governors responded with the next three points but the Skyhawks charged back to the tune of a 6-2 run, tying the score at 14-all. Jamie Rys and Walker posted kills on two straight possessions to keep the set tied (16-16) but Austin Peay notched five of the next six points on its way to the win.
Idemudia (four), Fair (three) and Rys (three) combined for 10 of UT Martin’s 12 kills in the second set.
The Skyhawks found themselves in a 4-0 deficit to start the third set until a Walker kill ended the UT Martin drought. Soon thereafter, the Governors led 10-5 but Fair piled up three kills over a stretch of six Skyhawk points to whittle UT Martin’s deficit to a single point at 13-12. Back-to-back kills by Reigelsperger tied the score at 18-all before Idemudia and Fair teamed up for a block to break the Skyhawks through for a lead. UT Martin’s lead was stretched out to three points (22-19) but Austin Peay tallied the next five points to gain momentum. An assisted block by Phillips and Walker tied the score at 24-24 but the Governors were able to manage the final two points to complete the win.
Fair had six kills with no errors in 14 swings while Hinshaw amassed 11 assists in the third set for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin goes on the road for the next four matches to start the month of October, starting with a visit to SIUE (Oct. 6) and Eastern Illinois (Oct. 7) next weekend.
