MURRAY, Ky. – Hunter Richardson captured medalist honors for the ninth time in his storied career as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team finished in second place out of 14 teams at the Murray State Invitational.

A day after he came close to shattering the Miller Memorial Golf Course record, Richardson shot an even-par 71 in the third round. The senior from Clarksville, Tenn. finished with a score of 203 (-10) to win the tournament by four strokes over Murray State’s Avery Edwards.

The Skyhawks carded a 288 (+4) today as a team, wrapping up the tournament with a 54-hole total of 856 (+4). That was good enough for a second-place finish behind host Murray State, who shot an 850 (-2) over three rounds.

“Second place is a great finish for our first tournament of the season,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “It was tough out there today with the weather conditions being rainy and windy but our guys did a good job of battling through that. For us to have so many new players in the lineup, it was a successful start to our year.”

Nick Wolf was responsible for the best score of any Skyhawk in the starting lineup today, as he shot a 70 (-1). Tate Chumley followed with a 73 (+2) while Ross Redmont (74, +3) and Ryan Davis (77, +6) completed the scoring for UT Martin.

Wolf and Chumley each tied for 22nd place with a final tally of 217 (+4). Redmont finished his tournament with a 219 (+6) while Davis generated a score of 226 (+13).

Entering the event as an individual, Jack Story’s 67 (-4) tied for the best score in the 89-golfer field during today’s third round. Zach Haynes boasted an under-par performance with a 70 today while Peyton Dix and Cameron Smith each tallied 74’s while also competing as individuals.

Overall, Haynes and Story each finished just outside the top-10 with a 214 (+1) to tie for 11th place. Dix (220, +7) and Smith (221, +8) finished just one shot apart to cap off a successful season debut.

The Skyhawks will be back in action next week when they travel to the Memphis Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Memphis. The tournament will be played at Colonial Country Club and will take place on Monday, Sept. 18 and Tuesday, Sept. 19.
