CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Every University of Tennessee at Martin tennis player who participated in the APSU Fall Invitational notched a win this weekend as the Skyhawks were one of seven teams who competed in the tournament hosted by Austin Peay.

As a team, UT Martin generated five singles wins and a pair of doubles victories. All in all, five Skyhawks made their season debuts over the weekend.

In Flight 3 singles, Olha Burak advanced to the semifinals before bringing home third-place honors. The junior from Lviv, Ukraine opened her singles participation with a 6-2, 6-2 win over UAB’s Natalie Voss before posting a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Sarah Beth Crowe from Belmont. In the Final Four, Burak fell 6-4, 6-2 to Central Arkansas’ Marli Van Heerden before winning by default over Chattanooga’s Annie Tarwater in the third-place match.

Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter teamed up to win the consolation final in Flight 1 doubles. The UT Martin duo fell to the Central Arkansas team of Rada Manateewat and QiLi Ma in the first round before bouncing back for a 6-0 sweep of Belmont’s Terra Sheldon and Maria Plaksina.

Jumamukhambetova also experienced success in singles play, picking up a pair of wins on the way to the consolation final in Flight 1. After a near victory (3-6, 6-2, 9-11) in the first round against Central Arkansas’ Pornpawe Pramethong, Jumamukhambetova made short work of Murray State’s Aarja Chakraborty (6-0, 6-0) and UAB’s Dominika Hrabalova (6-1, 6-0) in dominant fashion. In the consolation final, Jumamukhambetova battled until the end but eventually fell in marathon fashion to Murray State’s Claire Chang (6-4, 2-6, 14-16).

Freshman Jule Streif posted a win in her collegiate debut, as she competed in Flight 3 singles. She suffered a narrow 6-2, 2-6, 7-10 setback in the first round against Tarwater from Chattanooga but quickly bounced back for a 7-6 (8), 6-2 victory over Belmont’s Suzanna Stapler. Streif then competed throughout before falling 6-1, 6-2 to Chattanooga’s Mckenzie Barco.

Burak and Geut also came away with a victory in Flight 2 doubles. The duo began with a victory over the Belmont team of Stapler/Crowe in the first round before falling to Central Arkansas’ Amiru Shimoguchi and Xylia Chunan Xiang.

Potter and Geut also competed in Flight 1 singles and Flight 2 singles, respectively. Potter was matched up against Chattanooga’s Delaney Edwards (6-1, 6-4) and Chang from Murray State (6-1, 6-1) but ultimately could not come away with a victory. Geut was paired up with Hee-Jin Oh from Central Arkansas (6-3, 6-3) and Murray State’s Jeanne Masson (6-3, 6-0) but was eliminated from the bracket.
