SOCCER SKYHAWKS FIRE AWAY BUT FALL TO ARKANSAS STATE 2-0
September 8, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team outshot Arkansas State 22-13 but fell 2-0 this evening at Skyhawk Field.
UT Martin (2-4-2) was able to get off just five shots in the first period before turning up the heat on the Red Wolves (4-2) in the second half by firing off 17 shots.
Katelyn Colvin led the Skyhawks in the shots column this evening (four shots, two on goal) with Nicole Collins, Alice Adams and Isabella Roberts tallying three shots apiece. Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week recipient Amy McGivern chipped in two shots as did Sara Ketis. Maggie Burkett, Danae Kaldaridou, Miah Olaleye, Kamryn Chappell and Jacalyn Schubring all recorded one shot in the bout.
Erica Myers logged all 90 minutes in goal tonight, snagging seven saves in the match with two goals allowed.
“At no point are you happy about losing a game, but with five games in the stretch of 10 days, I must say that the girls were absolutely outstanding out there in the second half,” UT Martin head coach Phil McNamara said. “To change the outlook of the game like we did in the second half following an average and disappointing first half, is encouraging moving forward. So I am actually coming away from this game with a lot of excitement following a disappointing midweek performance at Jackson State. I thought we played fantastic soccer in the second half tonight. If we can compete at that intensity, level, fitness and speed of play, I am excited to see what we can do in conference play.”
UT Martin found itself at an early disadvantage as Arkansas State’s Victoria MacIntosh netted a goal at the 13:45 mark. That was the only blemish for the Skyhawk defense in the first 45 minutes as Myers made five saves in the first half to keep the score 1-0 at the break.
Olaleye almost evened the score in the 30th minute but her shot from 40 yards hit the crossbar. UT Martin kept firing attempts in an effort to tie the match but could not sneak one past Arkansas State goalkeeper Kelsey Ponder.
MacIntosh then provided the final goal of the match in the 86th minute. The Skyhawks would add three more shots in the final three minutes but could not find the back of the net.
UT Martin returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 10 as it travels to Cullowhee, NC to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
