MARTIN, Tenn. –
The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad starts its 2017-18 season this weekend when it travels to Clarksville, Tenn. for the APSU Fall Invitational, an Intercollegiate Tennis Association sanctioned event.

The Skyhawks are one of seven teams in the tournament field, joining host Austin Peay, Belmont, Central Arkansas, Chattanooga, Murray State and UAB. The action begins on Friday, Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. and will continue through the evening of Saturday, Sept. 9.

Head coach Dennis Taylor oversees a roster that includes five returners and three newcomers in 2017-18. Leading the returners is reigning All-Ohio Valley Conference second teamer Asel Jumamukhambetova, who went 22-6 in singles with an 8-1 mark in league play as a sophomore last season.

Andrea Plantada comes back for her junior campaign after tallying a combined 16-0 singles and doubles record in OVC play last year. Jemima Potter (team-best 22-5 doubles record, 8-0 OVC), Elina Geut (19-10 overall record) and Olha Burak (12-4 combined record) also return to give UT Martin five strong upperclassmen who heavily contributed to last season’s 12-5 team.

The Skyhawk freshman trio of Amelia Campbell, Mizuki Sakurai and Jule Streif will also make their collegiate debuts this weekend after years of stellar international experience at the junior level.

The duo of Jumamukhambetova and Potter will represent UT Martin in the Flight 1 doubles field, taking on the Central Arkansas duo of Rada Manataweewat/QiLi Ma in the opening round of the 11-team tournament.

In Flight 2 doubles, Burak and Geut will face Belmont’s Suzanna Stapler/Sarah Beth Crowe in the first round. The Skyhawk tandem of Campbell and Sakurai received a first-round bye in the 12-team field.

Jumamukhambetova and Potter will each compete in the Flight 1 singles tournament, which features 16 participants. Jumamukhambetova squares off against Pornpawee Pramethong from Central Arkansas while Potter takes on Chattanooga’s Delaney Edwards in the opening round.

The Flight 2 singles bracket includes 16 players, including Geut and Sakarai from UT Martin. Geut is matched up against Hee-Jin Oh from Central Arkansas while Sakurai will take on Murray State’s Amina Hadzic in the first round.

A trio of Skyhawks will compete in the Flight 3 singles tournament, which is also made up of 16 participants. In the opening round, Burak is paired against UAB’s Natalie Voss while Campbell takes on Crowe from Belmont and Streif faces off against Chattanooga’s Annie Tarwater.
