GEOFF MURPHY PROMOTED TO ASSISTANT COACH FOR UT MARTIN BASEBALL
July 25, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. - University of Tennessee at Martin head baseball coach Rick Robinson has announced that Geoff Murphy has been promoted to assistant coach from volunteer assistant.
Last season, Murphy oversaw a Skyhawk pitching staff who recorded several new school records including a new high in strikeouts for a season (429). Murphy was part of UT Martin’s record-breaking 2017 campaign, as the program recorded its most wins in the Division-I Era (25) as well as the most Ohio Valley Conference wins (12) while reaching the OVC Tournament for the first time since 2011.
“Coach Murphy did a great job last year as a full time assistant that could not receive a paycheck per the NCAA volunteer assistant rule,” Robinson said. “I am thankful he hung in there with us until a paying position opened up. He made an impact on our program last year and I know his impact will be even greater this year.”
UT Martin pitchers led the OVC in least doubles allowed (83) and least home runs allowed (44) in 2017. He mentored Dalton Westfall, whose 81 strikeouts last season ranks second all-time in school history. Murphy also tutored Alex Evans, whose 2017 season included eight victories (third in Skyhawk history) and 73 strikeouts (fourth in school history).
Prior to Murphy’s debut season on the staff at UT Martin, he enjoyed a stellar playing career at Boston College (2012-15) and Liberty University (2016). The Peachtree City, Ga. native also was an assistant for the Charlottesville Tom Sox of the Valley Baseball League in the summer of 2016.
“I want to thank Coach Robinson for the opportunity to move into an elevated role on the coaching staff,” Murphy said. “I’m excited to continue learning from him as well as working alongside a group of young, talented and energetic coaches this upcoming year. Last year was great being a part of the staff, and I am excited by the opportunity to have recruiting responsibilities and the chance to have a larger positive impact on the coaching staff and program.”
