MARTIN, Tenn. – The final regular season series of the season is set for this weekend as the University of Tennessee at Martin will travel north to take on Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State in a three-game set with major OVC Tournament implications at stake. The first game is scheduled for Thursday, May 18 at 6 p.m., followed by another evening contest on Friday, May 19 at 6 p.m. and an afternoon matinee on Saturday, May 20 at 1 p.m.
UT Martin (24-27, 11-16 OVC) currently sits at eighth in the OVC standings and hold the last spot in the OVC Tournament heading into the final weekend of play. The Skyhawks are hoping to return to the tournament for just the third time in program history, and first time since 2011.
Tanner Wessling solidified his final game at Skyhawk Field last weekend with a eighth inning grand slam in the Sunday finale against Jacksonville State to help his team reclaim eighth place overall. The Kent, Wash. native is batting a team-high .350 on the season, while picking up 37 RBI’s.
Alex Evans moved into third place in wins as a Skyhawk (16) with his four inning relief win on Sunday. The senior is tied for first in the OVC in wins with eight and has struck out 68 batter along the way. As a staff, the Skyhawk pitchers have struck out 409 batters on the season, shattering the previous school record of 369 set in 2016.
The Skyhawks will go with RHP Winston Cannon (4-4, 7.00 ERA) on Friday night and will announce the starters for Saturday and Sunday’s contests at a later time.
Murray State (25-27, 13-14 OVC) comes into the series also looking to claim their spot in the OVC Tournament. The Racers dropped two out of three to Morehead State last weekend. MSU is led offensively by slugger Brandon Gutzler. The redshirt junior outfielder has hit 16 homers this season, while driving in 65 runs.
The Racers are scheduled to send out RHP Ryan Dills (4-3, 6.48 ERA) on Thursday night, RHP Austin Dubsky (2-7, 5.88 ERA) on Friday night and LHP Luke Brown (2-3, 5.79 ERA) on Saturday afternoon.
