SKYHAWK BASEBALL TAKES ON IN-STATE RIVAL MEMPHIS IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE GAME

MARTIN, Tenn. – In the final mid-week tune-up of the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will head south to Millington to take on American Athletic foe and in-state rival Memphis at USA Stadium on Tuesday, May 9 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks are coming off a 4-1 week in which they took down Union, Alabama A&M and took two contests from Eastern Illinois over the weekend. As of now, UT Martin is in eighth place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings and will be looking to build some momentum heading into the final two weeks of regular season conference play.
UT Martin (23-24, 10-14 OVC) is 6-35 all-time against the Tigers from Bluff City, including a 3-26 mark while playing in Memphis. The Skyhawks dropped a 7-4 decision to Memphis last season, despite 2-4 outings from both Ryan Helgren and Josh Hauser.
The Skyhawks have been on an offensive tear of late, pounding out 56 runs just last week. Dan Kerwin was named the OVC Player of the Week for his standout performances. The Bradenton, Fla. native tallied a .500 (10-20) average, belting out three homers and three doubles, while driving in nine runs.
Quietly, Tanner Wessling is putting together a very solid year for the UT Martin offense. The Kent, Wash. native is batting a team-high .356, accumulating 64 hits and bringing home 30 runs.
Memphis (25-23, 6-12 American) is under the direction of 13-year veteran coach Daron Schoenrock. The Tigers are led by Chris Carrier, who has 10 home runs and 33 RBI’s on the season. Right-hander Colton Hathcock is expected to get the start for Memphis. Hathcock has recorded a 2-3 record on the year, while compiling a 2.70 ERA with 42 strikeouts.
