UT MARTIN BASEBALL BATTLES FAMILIAR FOES IN A PAIR OF MID-WEEK MATCHUPS

MARTIN, Tenn. – As the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team enters the stretch run of the 2017 season, the Skyhawks hope to build some momentum with a pair of non-conference matchups against Union and Alabama A&M. The Skyhawks will host Union on Tuesday, May 2 at 6 p.m., before making the trip down to Huntsville, Ala. to square off with the Bulldogs on Wednesday, May 3 at 2 p.m.
UT Martin (19-23, 8-13) was forced to reshuffle its schedule earlier in the year due to unfavorable weather conditions and in a rare situation will play both of these teams in back-to-back weeks. The Skyhawks dropped a 12-6 decision to Union last Tuesday before returning home to take care of Alabama A&M 12-2 the next night.
Melbourne, Australia native Ben Aslett racked up a .750 average during the two-game span last week against the two opponents, going 3-4 with three RBI’s. Creighton Eldridge also had a solid week at the plate scoring seven total runs last week, while belting out a trio of home runs in the weekend series against Austin Peay.
Union (32-17, 19-13 Gulf South) is coming off a series against West Georgia in which the Bulldogs took two-of-three games. Under coach Lee Driggers, Union has seen significant improvement this season, having already qualified for their conference tournament and reaching the 30-win mark. Nolen Milton is the leading slugger for the Bulldogs hitting a strong .353 with 13 home runs and 51 RBI’s on the year.
Alabama A&M (12-37, 9-12) recently qualified for the SWAC Conference Tournament and are looking to build some momentum themselves moving forward. Cornelius Woods has been a strong bat for the Bulldogs notching a .322 average with 11 doubles on the year. AAMU also has the NCAA Division-I leader in strikeout in Brandon Marsonek. The senior has tallied an impressive 113 punch outs on the season, while boasting a 2.60 ERA.
