UTM LEAPS INTO TOP FIVE; RICHARDSON IN MEDALIST CHASE AFTER DAY TWO OF OVC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
April 25, 2017
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin shot the second-best team score in the field to climb back into contention for the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference championship, as Day Two was held today once again at The Shoals course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
The Skyhawks accounted for 11 birdies and an eagle during the second round, finishing with a score of 286 (-2). With 18 holes left to play, UT Martin ranks fifth with an overall score of 580 (+4), trailing leader Eastern Kentucky (569, -7) by 11 strokes.
In addition, Skyhawk junior Hunter Richardson rode a remarkable Tuesday round into medalist aspirations. The three-time All-OVC honoree played bogey-free golf today, racking up two birdies and the tournament’s only eagle (on the par-5, 581-yard Hole No. 12) on the day for a 68. Richardson will go for his second consecutive medalist accolade tomorrow, as his 139 (-5) trails only Tennessee Tech freshman Charles Seals (135, -9).
“We improved quite a bit today,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “The team was in a good frame of mind this morning and I’m proud of the way we bounced back from yesterday to close the gap. Hunter is right there near the top of the standings and a win is very attainable for him. The team leaders of the tournament played well again today but you never know what will happen on the final day. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
All-OVC honoree Austin Swafford generated a solid second round, as he carded an even-par 72 thanks to 14 pars and a pair of birdies. Leading the Skyhawks with three birdies apiece this morning was Jack Story and Tyler Guy, who each shot identical 73’s today. Story shot 2-under over his final 13 holes today while Guy was at 2-under for his first 16 holes of the second round. Gavin Shellnut was even-par through his first 12 holes before rounding out his day with a 78 (+6).
For the tournament, Swafford and Story are each tied with scores of 148 (+4). Shellnut follows with a 150 (+6) while Guy has tallied a 153 (+9) through 36 holes.
The 2017 OVC Championships third and final round is set for Wednesday, April 26. The Skyhawks will be paired with Jacksonville State and Austin Peay, as Guy will lead things off at 9:40 a.m. He will be followed by Shellnut (9:50), Story (10:00), Swafford (10:10) and Richardson (10:20).
