MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second consecutive week, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will play five games in six days. This time around, the Skyhawks will kick off the week with a pair of matchups beginning tomorrow night, April 25, in Jackson when UT Martin will take on Union. The following night, April 26, the Skyhawks will return home to face Alabama A&M.
UT Martin (17-20, 7-11) enjoyed their best stretch of the season last week as the Skyhawks went 5-0 and recorded wins over Evansville, Christian Brothers and a three-game sweep of Ohio Valley Conference rival SIU Edwardsville. The five-game winning streak is tied for the longest of the season, and the six straight conference victories are the most since UT Martin joined the Division-I ranks.
It was a solid mixture of pitching and hitting that brought success to the Skyhawks throughout the week. Senior Alex Evans recorded a pair of wins and a save to lead the UT Martin pitching staff, while Peyton Cain notched a win and a save and Dalton Westfall picked up a victory, along with 11 strikeouts. Westfall was also named the OVC Co-Pitcher of the Week for his performance on Saturday against the Cougars.
This week’s opponents will continue to test the Skyhawks pitchers beginning tomorrow against Union. The Bulldogs (28-16, 16-12 GSC) are enjoying their best season under fourth year head coach Lee Driggers. At the plate, Union is led by Nolen Milton, who has notched a .345 average on the year, belting 12 home runs and driving in 42.
On Wednesday, the Skyhawks will turn their attention to the Huntsville, Ala. natives Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs (10-34, 7-11 SWAC) will take on Samford on Tuesday before making the trip to Martin the following day. Under fifth year coach Mitch Hill, Alabama A&M is led offensively by Cornelius Woods. The redshirt-senior is hitting .313 on the season with nine doubles and 17 RBI’s.
Both contests are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Fans are encouraged to tune in to Union’s broadcast of the game online at the link above. Live stats are also available for both games at the top of the page.
