MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin ranks seventh out of 11 teams after the opening 18 holes of the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Championships, which is played at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
The Skyhawks shot a 294 (+6) today, carding 10 birdies and the second-most pars (64) in the field as a team. SIUE sits in first place with a 282 (-6) while Jacksonville State (285, -3) and Eastern Kentucky (286, -2) also shot under par as a team in the first round.
“We didn’t play that bad today, we just need to get some more birdies tomorrow,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “If you look at last year’s score, we were at 5-over par after the first round so we played about the same before we hit our stride. I am confident that we will come out and play better tomorrow.”
Hunter Richardson led the way for the Skyhawks today, producing a pair of birdies to go along with 15 pars for a 71 (-1). He is tied for seventh place out of 55 participants after tying for the best par-3 scoring (2.50, -2) average of anybody in the tournament.
