ANNUAL UT MARTIN ATHLETICS AWARDS ANNOUNCED AT SENIOR BANQUET

MARTIN, Tenn. – Five University of Tennessee at Martin student-athletes were honored at the 12th annual Senior Banquet in the Champions Club of the Hardy Graham Stadium press box this evening.
Ann Asipan (cross country) and Sarah Candeloro shared the 2017 Bettye Giles Female Athlete of the Year while Jacolby Mobley (men’s basketball) brought home the 2017 Bob Carroll Male Athlete of the Year honor. Austin Swafford (golf) and Damani Taylor (football) also earned the 2017 Sportsmanship Award.
In her two seasons as a Skyhawk, Asipan has completely rewritten the program’s cross country record book. She became the first-ever UT Martin runner to win the Ohio Valley Conference cross country championship in 2015 and duplicated the impressive feat again this past fall – becoming just the fifth athlete to win back-to-back medalist honors. Meanwhile, Candeloro ranks in the program’s top-five in both singles (84) and doubles (76) wins while garnering a pair of All-OVC mentions. She helped lead the Skyhawk tennis squad to the 2016 OVC regular season championship.
Mobley pieced together one of the best individual seasons in UT Martin men’s basketball history, helping the Skyhawks to their first-ever outright OVC West division championship and third straight postseason appearance. He led the conference in three-point field goals made (3.3 per game) while ranking fourth in scoring (19.5 points per game), accumulating All-OVC first team and All-District 19 honors.
Sharing the Sportsmanship Award was Swafford and Taylor. Swafford was a key member of UT Martin’s 2016 OVC championship squad, which was the first OVC title in program history. He has also helped the Skyhawk golf program win the OVC Sportsmanship Award for the third consecutive season in 2015-16. Taylor has served as the heart and soul of the UT Martin defense over the past two seasons, often serving as one of the team’s three designated team captains. He helped the Skyhawks to a 12-4 OVC record and secured a pair of all-conference accolades during his UT Martin tenure.
