MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin head volleyball coach Jaclynn Yocum has announced the additions of McKala Bozman and Justine Walker to the 2017 Skyhawk roster.

A 6-0 middle blocker, Bozman joins UT Martin from Catawba Valley Community College and will be a junior next fall. Walker finished up her prep career at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert, Ariz. and will enroll at UT Martin as a freshman middle/right side hitter for the 2017 season.

Bozman was part of a Catawba Valley squad that went 41-7 with an undefeated 15-0 conference mark in 2016. Playing for head coach Shannon Hudson and alongside fellow Skyhawk signee Megan Fair, she helped aid the Redhawks to their first-ever NJCAA Tournament Final Four appearance and establish a new school record for single-season wins. She compiled first team All-Region X accolades after ranking fourth nationally in blocks (174, 1.23 per set) and fifth in hitting percentage (.425), committing just 75 attack errors in 48 matches. She slammed down 331 kills (2.35 per set) while chipping in 20 service aces and 74 digs as a sophomore.

A King, NC native, Bozman racked up eight matches of double-digit kills and hit .500 or better in 25 instances last season. She accumulated a career-best 18 kills against only two miscues for a .533 attack percentage against Wallace State on Oct. 8. She turned away five or more blocks on 15 different occasions, including a career-high 11-block performance at Pasco-Hernando State on Sept. 10. She also had multiple service aces in seven of the last 14 matches.

Bozman spent her freshman campaign at UNC Pembroke, where she played for head coach Ellen McGill. She started 11 matches for the Braves, accumulating 60 kills, 30 blocks and 12 digs spread out over 45 sets as a freshman in 2015. Her season-high 10 kills came against Columbus State on Nov. 13 while she also swatted a season-best seven blocks against Coker on Nov. 3.

Bozman prepped at West Stokes High School under head coaches Jordan Stevens and Crystal Boyles. She helped guide the Wildcats to a 14-8 record and the third round of the state playoffs during her senior campaign, tallying 411 kills, 117 blocks and 61 digs. She was a two-time all-conference honoree at WSHS, amassing 252 kills and 47 blocks as a junior.

“McKala is a great athlete with a very impressive vertical,” Yocum said. “She is high-energy and fun to watch. We are excited about the personality she will bring to the court.”

Standing at 6-2, Walker has put together an impressive career under head coach Tayler Bader at CVHS. She garnered Arizona Interscholastic Association all-section first team honors and was also named to the AZPreps365.com all-division squad as a junior after tallying 157 kills (2.60 per set) and a .287 hitting percentage. She also added 52 blocks and 44 digs during the 2015 season.

Walker’s sophomore season included 248 kills (3.0 per set) on a miraculous .587 attack percentage to go along with 38 blocks. As a freshman, Walker helped the Coyotes to a 41-9 record and a state finals appearance.

Walker has also developed as a member of the East Valley Juniors Volleyball Club, which is located in the greater Phoenix area. She played for coaches Aaron Payne and Patti Snyder-Park while playing alongside incoming UT Martin freshman Maddi Noble.

“Justine brings good size to our roster and provides versatility as she will compete both in the middle and the right side,” Yocum said. “For an incoming freshman, she has a strong volleyball IQ and is very consistent in her court performance.”

The duo of Bozman and Walker join Bailey Darnall (Burlington, Iowa/Indian Hills CC), Megan Fair (Conover, NC/Catawba Valley CC), Brooke Gyori (Oregon, Ohio/Owens CC), Kenzie Hinshaw (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern HS), Maddi Noble (Glendale, Ariz./Sandra Day O’Connor HS) and Jamie Rys (Bloomington, Ill./Normal West HS) in the Skyhawks’ incoming class for 2017.
