April 11, 2017
OLD HICKORY, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team passed its final regular season tuneup with flying colors, securing the team and individual championships at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate held at Hermitage Golf Club Presidents Reserve.
The victory was the Skyhawks’ fourth of the 2016-17 campaign, as UT Martin accounted for a 293 (+5) today on its way to a final tally of 880 (+16). The Skyhawks won the 13-team tournament by seven shots in front of second place Detroit Mercy.
In the process, junior Hunter Richardson won medalist honors for the fourth time this season and seventh time in his illustrious career. The Clarksville, Tenn. native carded the best round of any of the 70 participants today with a 69 to bring his three-round total to 213 (-3). He dialed up four birdies this morning while winning the tournament by two strokes.
“This was another team win where all five players chipped in and I am proud of our team,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We’ve had a great season so far and this was a fitting way to wind up the regular season. The guys are feeling good and we are looking forward to defending our Ohio Valley Conference championship.”
Austin Swafford polished off his steady tournament play with a 73 today, tying for sixth overall in the field with a 218 (+2). Gavin Shellnut captured his fourth top-15 finish of the season after a third-round 76 brought his final score to 224 (+8).
Jack Story posted a 75 this morning, finishing in a tie for 16th place with a 225 (+9). Tyler Guy generated a 76 in the final round on his way to a 230 (+14).
The two Skyhawk individuals finished with identical scores of 228 (+12). Cameron Smith rode an eagle to the second-best score of the third round (behind only Richardson) with a 71 today while Zach Haynes compiled a 78 this morning.
UT Martin will now turn its attention to the 2017 OVC Championships, which will take place on April 24-26 at the Fighting Joe Golf Course on the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Last year, the Skyhawks seized their first-ever OVC golf championship with a one-shot victory on the same course, shooting an 879 (+15) in the three-day, 54-hole event.
