MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second time in seven days, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will hit the road to take on a nationally ranked squad out of the Southeastern Conference. This time the Skyhawks will head north to take on No. 10 Kentucky on Wednesday, April 12.
Unlike last week’s game, where UT Martin (12-16, 4-11 OVC) was coming off a three-game losing streak at Eastern Kentucky, this mid-week matchup has a different feel to it thanks to the Skyhawks’ three-game sweep over the second place team in the Ohio Valley Conference, Morehead State. UT Martin outscored the Eagles 28-11 in what was the first conference sweep since April 2011.
This contest marks the sixth ever meeting between the two programs, with Kentucky coming out on top in all five previous meeting thus far. However, it has been 10 years since these squads met on the diamond and for UT Martin, they hope they can continue the momentum from the weekend and pick a marquee win over a nationally ranked foe.
Seven different Skyhawks racked up averages of .300 or better against Morehead State, while 10 different UT Martin players drove in at least one run. Freshman Connor Aube and junior outfielder Creighton Eldridge each hit a blistering .545 over the three-game span, combining for 12 hits, including two doubles, three triples, six RBI’s, and five walks.
Kentucky (22-11, 8-4 SEC) heads into the matchup having dropped two-of-three last weekend at Mississippi State. However, the Wildcats posted a strong start to their conference play winning seven of the first nine games. Sophomore Tristan Pompey heads into the contest as the home team’s leading hitter. The outfielder out of Toronto, Canada has racked up a .346 average this season, including belting out 10 doubles and driving in 24 runs.
The Wildcats are expected to send out freshman lefty Zack Thompson. In his short time with Kentucky, Thompson has earned a record of 2-2, with a 5.46 ERA, while striking out 36. His last time out, Thompson went 2.2 innings against Louisville, allowing three earned and striking out four.
First pitch from Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Ky. is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
