The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will host a pair of Ohio Valley Conference doubleheaders over the weekend, serving as the team’s first conference homestand of the season with matchups against Murray State (Saturday, April 8) and Austin Peay (Sunday, April 9). First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. on both days.
The Skyhawks (25-11, 4-2 OVC) enter the weekend looking to build upon the team’s hot start to league plays as the home squad currently sits in a tie for third place in the standings through six games. The Skyhawks have split series against Jacksonville State and SIUE while sweeping Tennessee Tech so far this season. In the team’s most recent non-conference series, UT Martin dropped a midweek doubleheader to Memphis, 5-4 and 6-2.
UT Martin currently leads the OVC in runs scored (220), stolen bases (105) and batting average (.319) while ranking second in doubles (53), on base percentage (.402). walks (110) and hits (309). The Skyhawks also rank second nationally in total stolen bases while ranking third in stolen bases per game with 2.92. Senior Carly Gonzales ranks ninth nationally and first in the OVC with 30 stolen bases while also pacing the squad with a .377 batting average while tallying 10 extra base knocks. The junior duo of Jodie Duncan (.369) and Savannah Dodson (.360) are also posting strong offensive seasons.
Senior Brooke Kennedy (12-3, 2.89 ERA) paces the team in wins, appearances, starts, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts to serve as the team’s ace. The Skyhawks can also deploy the arms of Sara Hooten (6-3, 2.92 ERA), Samantha Scott (3-3, 3.23 ERA) and Seeley Layne (3-2, 3.98 ERA) in the pitching circle.
Murray State (25-12, 2-3 OVC) enters the weekend looking to snap a three-game losing streak while in the midst of a seven-game road swing. The Racers are led offensively by the play of Jessica Twaddle who proves to be a force at the plate with a .300 batting average, 12 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 30 RBIs on the season. Taylor Odom also serves as a key run producer, tallying six home runs and 24 RBIs. Mason Robinson (17-6, 1.79 ERA) has tallied 18 complete games and five shutouts in the circle, striking out 78 in 141 innings of work.
Austin Peay (14-20, 2-4 OVC) enters the weekend with three consecutive series splits against Memphis, Tennessee Tech and Evansville over its last six games. The Governors lead the OVC with 36 home runs on the season as Carly Mattson (.337, nine home runs, 20 RBIs), Danielle Liermann (.340, eight home runs, 29 RBIs) and Kacy Acree (.312, seven home runs, 22 RBIs) pace the team offensively. Autumn Hanners (6-7, 3.23 ERA) leads the pitching staff while Kelsey Gross (7-6, 5.87 ERA) serves as the team’s other primary starter.
UT Martin holds a 13-12 series advantage over Murray State in a series which dates back to 2010 despite the Racers winning six consecutive games in the matchup. The Skyhawks also hold a significant 67-27 series advantage over Austin Peay, winning 13 of the last 15 meetings.
