MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin softball team suffered a series sweep with a pair of home setbacks to in-state foe Memphis on Tuesday afternoon. The Skyhawks fell just short 5-4 in the first game of the day before falling 6-2 in the evening affair.

The Skyhawks (25-11) would be outhit on the day by a margin of 20-15 but it was the team’s five errors and 12 runners left on base which plagued the squad in the doubleheader. Of the team’s 11 runs allowed, only six runs were earned while allowing the Tigers to hit .323 on the afternoon. Despite the team’s struggles defensively, UT Martin stranded the team’s potential winning runs on base in the bottom of the seven in game one, stranding the bases loaded in the inning.

Five players tallied multiple hits on the afternoon with Gracyn McBride and Carly Gonzales notching three hits each on the day. The trio of Aeron Smith, Lauren Myers and Jodie Duncan also tallied a pair of base hits on the day while McBride led the way with three RBIs.

Game 1: Memphis 5, UT Martin 4

Memphis would waste little time settling into the visitors’ dugout, tallying a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. The game would start with an error before doubles by Lindsay Crowdus and Lindsey Stickrod gave the Tigers an early 2-0 advantage.

The Tigers would strike again in the top of the second. Following a leadoff single to start the inning, the squad would find another double – this time from Kyler Trosclair – to push their lead out to three runs.

UT Martin would finally get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. A single by Duncan would get the inning started before a two-out single through the left side by Rachel Williams put the Skyhawks on the board.

Despite the scoring inning for the Skyhawks, the visitors would continue to pad their advantage in the third inning. Stickrod would tally her second double of the game before coming home to score on a RBI single by Brooke Lee. After swiping second herself, Lee would later score the team’s fifth run on a single through the left side by Trosclair.

Facing a four-run deficit, UT Martin would begin its comeback attempt in the third. After a leadoff single and stolen base by Gonzales put the senior in scoring position, McBride would single up the middle to make it a 5-2 contest.

Trailing by three in the final inning of play, UT Martin looked for one last comeback attempt. Three consecutive singles by the trio of Smith, Savannah Dodson and Gonzales would load the bases before a run came home to score on a fielder’s choice by Myers. Another single by McBride would cut the margin down to 5-4. The Skyhawks would load the bases once again in the inning with one out, but could not get the tying run home to score – dropping the contests by one run.

Freshman Samantha Scott (3-3) earned the loss, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in five innings of work. Sophomore Sara Hooten appeared in relief, tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just two runs.

Game 2: Memphis 6, UT Martin 2

Unlike in the first game of the day, UT Martin would jump out to an early advantage in the first inning. Gonzales would start the inning by reaching on a fielding error before swiping second and eventually coming home to score on a RBI single by McBride for the second time on the day. The Skyhawks would add to their early lead later in the inning as a RBI single to the shortstop by Smith gave the home squad a two-run lead.

Memphis would be held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. Trailing by two, the Tigers would cut their deficit in half as Tyler Johnson led off the inning with a solo home run over the batters eye in centerfield.
