MARTIN, Tenn. – Winners of nine straight matches, the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team looks to keep the momentum rolling this week when it travels to Southeast Missouri on Tuesday, April 4 and hosts Jacksonville State on Friday, April 7.
The Skyhawks (9-3, 5-0 OVC) have not lost since Feb. 26, winning their first five Ohio Valley Conference matches in the process. The nine-match winning streak is the second-longest in the program’s Division-I era and is the longest since 2006.
UT Martin is 24-2 all-time against Southeast Missouri, having won 18 consecutive decisions against the Redhawks. The Skyhawks hold a 9-6 all-time mark and have won four of their last five matches against Jacksonville State.
Against OVC competition, UT Martin has compiled a 26-4 singles record and a 10-2 doubles record. Burcu Tari, Asel Jumamukhambetova and Andrea Plantada Cortes have combined for a 15-0 OVC singles record at No. 3 through No. 5 while the Skyhawk pairs of Sarah Candeloro/Jemima Potter and Plantada Cortes/Tari have each gone 4-0 in OVC doubles play at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
Tari and Jumamukhambetova each have won nine straight matches in singles, as their nine victories lead UT Martin. In doubles, Candeloro/Potter has registered six consecutive wins while Plantada Cortes/Tari has won four straight matches to tie for the team lead in doubles victories with seven.
Southeast Missouri (12-4, 4-1 OVC) enters tomorrow’s 2 p.m. tilt on a four-match winning streak and has won seven of its last eight decisions. Oleksandra Doroshenko was named to the OVC’s preseason top-10 player list, as she and Kseniya Zonova each have a team-best 12 singles wins this spring. Zonova, Mila Majtan and Anais Emelie are each 4-1 in OVC play while the duo of Doroshenko/Isabella Krupa lead the Redhawks with a 12-4 doubles record and a 4-1 OVC mark.
UT Martin will host Jacksonville State (3-13, 0-5 OVC) at 1 p.m. on Friday. The Gamecocks won three of their first four matches but have lost 12 straight matches heading into a midweek matchup against Birmingham Southern tomorrow. Alba Conejero accounts for a team-high eight singles wins, joining Diana Monsalve with a team-best two OVC victories. Claudia Marsala and Malin Buechner are responsible for a team-high five wins in doubles play.
