EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team picked up its first road victory at Ohio Valley Conference rival SIUE since 2013 en route to a series split on Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks snapped their four-game winning streak with a 5-0 setback in the first game of the day before charging back with a 7-3 win in the afternoon.

The Skyhawks (25-9, 4-2 OVC) outhit the Cougars 13-12 on the day as five different players tallied multi-hit afternoons. Sophomore Lauren Myers paced the team with three hits on the day while the quartet of Carly Gonzales, Jodie Duncan, Aeron Smith and Renate Meckl each tallied a pair of base knocks. Smith led all players with a pair of RBIs while Duncan and Rachel Williams also drove in runs.

Senior hurler Brooke Kennedy (12-2, 3.01 ERA) picked up her 40th career victory to move into sole possession of fifth place on the program’s all-time wins leaderboard. Kennedy tallied her 10th complete game of the season while striking out seven and allowing two earned runs in a victory. A pair of freshmen pitched in Game One as Seeley Layne (3-2, 3.65 ERA) suffered a defeat after allowing five earned runs in two innings of work. Fellow freshman Samantha Scott would pitch four scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits.

Game 1: SIUE 5, UT Martin 0

SIUE wasted little time getting on the board in first inning. Three hits would lead to a run being scored after a leadoff double was followed by a RBI single by Haley Chambers-Book to put the Cougars on top.

The Cougars would add to their margin in the bottom of the third inning. Five hits in the inning would result in four runs to push the home team’s margin out to five runs off RBIs by Zoe Schafer, Tess Eby, Allison Smiley and Kalei Kaneshiro.

With a five-run cushion, the Cougars would feel confident with arguably the OVC’s most dynamic pitcher in the circle with Chambers-Book. The senior would hold the Skyhawks hitless until the seventh inning, notching a shutout victory while striking out seven.

Game 2: UT Martin 7, SIUE 3

UT Martin would jump out to a lead in the top of the third inning. Gonzales would rip a one-out triple into right center. With a runner just 60-feet away, Myers would single up the middle to bring home the go-ahead run.

SIUE would rally to tie the game in the bottom of the third. The Skyhawks would put the leadoff runner on base after hitting the first batter of the inning. The Cougars would then bring in the tying run on a RBI fielder’s choice by Chambers-Book to tie the contest.

The Skyhawks took a lead once again in the top of the fifth inning. Myers would draw a walk before moving into scoring position by stealing second. After Gracyn McBride would be hit by a pitch and removed for pinch runner Alexa Combs, the Skyhawks would take a lead with a opposite field single by Duncan. Another run would come home to score on a throwing error on a delayed double steal to take a 3-1 advantage.

UT Martin would add to its lead in the seventh innings looking for insurance runs. A pair of singles by Gonzales and Myers would start the inning before Meckl would load the bases with a bunt single. Two runs would come home to score on a fielding error off the bat of Alli Fulcher while Williams was hit by a pitch to score a pair. With the bases still loaded, Smith would single into right center to score a pair and give the visitor a 7-1 lead.

SIUE looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Chambers-Book would tally another RBI off a groundout while Schafer cut the margin to four runs with a RBI single through the left side. Despite the two runs, Kennedy would stay tough on the Cougar bats by extinguishing the scoring threat and securing the 7-3 victory.

UT Martin will return to action with a non-conference doubleheader against in-state foe Memphis on Tuesday, April 4. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
