SIMPSON ROUNDS OUT FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF WITH THREE NEW ADDITIONS
March 22, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin football head coach Jason Simpson has announced the addition of three new coaches to fill out the squad’s staff. The Skyhawks welcome Ben Larson as special teams coordinator and defensive line coach, Dominique Bowman as defensive backs coach and Tyler Rice as quarterbacks coach.
Larson joins the Skyhawks after serving as special teams special assistant at Texas for four years. While at Texas, Larson served alongside special teams coordinator Jeff Traylor under head coach Charlie Strong. During his tenure for the Longhorns he oversaw punter Michael Dickson who garnered All-American honors after ranking as the Big 12’s leading punter and UT’s all-time single season record holder. Dickson was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year and became Texas’s first-ever finalist for the Ray Guy Award after averaging 47.4 yards per punt while tallying 25 punts which went at least 50 yards – including a career-best 74-yarder. Punt returner Daje Johnson also earned all-conference honors under his watch.
Before joining Texas, Larson served as the associate strength coach for football at Tennessee for the 2012 season. Prior to his stint in the weight room, Larson served as the Vols special teams quality control coach from 2010-12 under head coach Derek Dooley.
Prior to his time at Tennessee, Larson held the position of offensive and special teams graduate assistant at Louisiana Tech under Dooley from 2007-09. Larson has also served as assistant director for sports performance at Northwestern State, an intern at South Florida and a high school coach at Langley (Va.) High School.
Bowman joins the Skyhawks after serving as the defensive backs coach at the University of Arkansas at Monticello for the 2016 season. While leading the secondary unit, the Weevils tallied 11 interceptions on the year along with 34 pass breakups.
Bowman joined Arkansas Monticello following a two-year stint as defensive coordinator at Cordova High School in Memphis. Bowman helped led his team to a 9-2 record while ranking as the fifth-best total defensive unit in the state of Tennessee and first in the Shelby Metro area. During the 2015 season, Bowman coached three first-team all-region defensive backs and two first-team all-state selections.
Bowman was also selected as the defensive coordinator for the Liberty Bowl Memphis Metro All-Star Game both in 2014 and 2015.
Rice returns to UT Martin after beginning his collegiate playing career for the Skyhawks in 2012. Before joining the UT Martin staff, Rice served as an assistant coach at Wayne County High School where he was a former prolific quarterback. While coaching the Wildcats, the team posted a 13-2 overall record before falling to eventual state champion Dresden.
Prior to his time at the prep ranks, Rice spent a season as an offensive student assistant at Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State in 2015. While a member of the Racers, Rice assisted an offense which averaged 466.1 yards of total offense behind explosive All-American quarterback KD Humphries who threw for 3,778 yards and 22 touchdowns. Humphries led the nation in completions per game (30.0), passing yards (3,778) and passing yards per game (343.5).
