UT MARTIN TENNIS ROLLS PAST EASTERN KENTUCKY IN OVC OPENER, 6-1

RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team clicked on all cylinders today, breezing through a 6-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky in its Ohio Valley Conference opener at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
The win was the fifth straight for the Skyhawks, who improve to 5-3 overall and 20-5 all-time in OVC openers. UT Martin claimed two of the three doubles matches while piecing together five victories in singles play today.
Burcu Tari and Andrea Plantada Cortes teamed up for a dominant 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles to get the Skyhawks off on the right foot. After Eastern Kentucky (5-7, 1-1 OVC) won at No. 2 doubles, Sarah Candeloro and Jemima Potter clinched the doubles point for UT Martin with a 6-4 triumph at No. 1.
The Skyhawks then raced through singles, starting with Candeloro’s 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 1. Hitomi Naito followed with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 before Tari accounted for an impressive 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 comeback win at No. 3 for her fifth straight singles victory. Plantada Cortes was responsible for a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 while Asel Jumamukhambetova polished off the win with a 6-3, 6-7, 10-4 win at No. 4.
UT Martin’s spring home opener is set for next weekend when the Skyhawks host a pair of OVC opponents. The Skyhawks will take on Belmont on Friday, March 24 before playing host to Tennessee State on Saturday, March 25. Both matches are set to begin at 2 p.m.
