MARTIN, Tenn. – Coming off its second straight mid-week victory with a 7-3 win over Lipscomb, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will continue their road swing with a three-game set against defending Ohio Valley Conference champions Southeast Missouri. Starting times from Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo. are set for 6 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, and 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 19.
The Skyhawks are hoping to avenge last year’s losses to the eventual conference champ as the Redhawks stormed into Martin to take all three games in the series. In total, Southeast Missouri holds a 73-22-1 all-time advantage over UT Martin including a 36-5-1 mark in Cape Girardeau.
Offensively, a steady balance of newcomers and returners have paced the Skyhawk attack thus far with freshmen Connor Aube (.321, 13 runs, eight RBI’s) and Anthony Adduci (.237, nine RBI’s) contributing heavily, while redshirt junior Tyler Albright (.439, seven doubles, 15 RBI’s) has been the consistent leader for the UT Martin bats. Tanner Wessling has also been steady for the Skyhawks hitting .346 and driving in eight runs.
The UT Martin pitching staff got off to a sizzling start to the 2017 campaign, but have since slightly cooled off. Dalton Westfall (2-1, 1.93 ERA) is ranked ninth in the country in strikeouts per nine innings (14.66) on his way to punching out 38 hitters in four starts this season. Lefty Dom Bazzani (1-1, 5.66 ERA) has notched 22 strikeouts and Alex Evans (1-2, 3.44 ERA) has tallied 19. Evans has combined with newcomer Peyton Cain (0-1, 3.45 ERA, 17 strikeouts) to lead a much improved Skyhawk bullpen.
Southeast Missouri enters the contest coming off a 5-4 victory over Missouri State on Wednesday. Prio to that victory, the Redhawks also stumbled in the opening weekend of OVC play dropping decisions of 12-9, 17-5 and 3-2 at Morehead State. SEMO is led offensively by a host of talented Redhawks including outfielder Dan Holst (.357, two triples, 10 RBI’s) and catcher Kylar Robertson (four doubles, six RBI’s). The Redhawks have a pair of sluggers who have sent three or more homeruns out of the park as Chris Osborne has hit three and Tristen Gagan has belted four long balls.
The SEMO pitching staff is expected to send out Clay Chandler (1-0, 3.86 ERA, 21 strikeouts) on Friday, Robert Beltran (0-2, 9.24 ERA, 12 strikeouts) on Saturday and Justin Murphy (2-1, 5.62 ERA, 15 strikeouts on Sunday.
