JACKSON, Tenn. – For the third straight round, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team pieced together the best score in the field to notch its third victory of the season, topping the leaderboard of the eight-team Grover Page Classic at Jackson Country Club.

UT Martin’s 299 (+11) in today’s final round was 13 shots better than any other team, as the Skyhawks finished with an 873 (+9) for the tournament. That overall score bested second-place Samford by 13 strokes as UT Martin claimed the tournament title for the fourth time in the last six years and fifth time since 2009.

“We played in 10 to 15 mile-per-hour winds and the wind chill all day was around 20 degrees,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “I told our team to just try to survive, play it one shot and one hole at a time. I knew they would grind it out and that’s what they did. I’m proud of each and every one of our players for this well-deserved win over a quality field of teams.”

Hunter Richardson and Tyler Guy each claimed a spot on the all-tournament team. Out of 48 golfers in the field, Richardson shot an eagle and was the only participant who shot under par (71, -1) today before finishing in second place with a 213 (-3) for the tournament. Guy led at the end of each of the first two rounds before shooting a 76 (+4) today, placing third overall with a final tally of 216 (E).

Austin Swafford just missed out on a top-five finish, as the senior shot a 76 (+4) during the third round to close out the tournament in sixth place at 220 (+4). Gavin Shellnut (224, +8) and Jack Story (226, +10) also each carded a 76 today to finish 14th and 17th, respectively.

Competing as individuals, Cameron Smith posted an 84 today while Zach Haynes shot an 81. Smith finished with a three-round total of 230 (+14) and Haynes wrapped up his tournament with a 236 (+20).

Carpenter was quick to recognize the staff at the Jackson Country Club, who has graciously hosted the Grover Page Classic for 11 consecutive years.

“We are very appreciative of the everybody at the Jackson Country Club, especially the golf course superintendent,” Carpenter said. “The greens and bunkers were absolutely first class and their staff worked hard to clear off the snow on Sunday so everybody could get in a practice round. This year’s tournament was absolutely the best it could be.”

The Skyhawks return to action on March 26-28 when they travel to Little Rock, Ark. for the UALR/First Tee Classic.
