MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team looks to keep its hot start to the season alive with the team's home opener against Division II foe Christian Brothers on Wednesday, March. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Skyhawks (11-2) are coming off another stellar weekend at the Frost Classic hosted by Chattanooga where the squad posted a 4-1 mark and outscored its opponents 28-15. Included in the series was a balance of offensive outbursts and stingy pitching performances. The pitching duo of Brooke Kennedy (5-1, 3.50 ERA) and Sara Hooten (2-1, 2.74 ERA) both notched shutout victories over the weekend while freshmen Samantha Scott and Seeley Layne also picked up wins.
With the completion of the Frost Classic, UT Martin is off to its best start since 2010. Junior Jodie Duncan led the way for the Skyhawks over the past weekend by tallying eight hits, two doubles, one home run, and five RBIs. Sophomore Alli Fulcher also notched an impressive week of performances, by tallying five hits, including a home run and five RBIs. Along with the team's hot hitting, the Skyhawks remained mobile on the basepaths. As a whole, the Skyhawks were able to steal 19 bases as Lauren Myers led the way with five, followed by four from Carly Gonzales along with three each by Alicia Hansen and Savannah Dodson.
Pitching proved to be solid once again for UT Martin by notching two shutouts and a one-run game. Kennedy and Hooten each tossed a shutout and went a total of 12 innings over the weekend. Scott was able to get a victory in the 6-1 victory against Farleigh Dickinson while classmate Seeley Layne tallied her first career-victory in a comeback against Northwestern State.
UT Martin is coached by Donley Canary who is currently in his 16th season. Canary holds a 499-370-2 overall mark. With his next victory, Canary will become just the fifth coach in Ohio Valley Conference softball history to eclipse 500 career victories.
Christian Brothers (4-12) enters the midweek contest riding a three-game losing streak after dropping a three-game series to Union this past weekend. The Buccaneers are led offensively by Kylie Steagall with a .382 batting average and three doubles. The pitching duo of Jenna Cotter (2-4, 4.81 ERA) and Julia Schassburg (2-5, 7.55 ERA) ranks as the team's top arms.
This will be the first matchup against Division II opponent Christian Brothers.
