GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team concluded its participation in the Loyola Intercollegiate this morning, finishing eighth out of 16 squads in the highly competitive field.

The Skyhawks ranked first out of the three Ohio Valley Conference schools in the tournament, finishing with a total score of 860 (-4). UT Martin carded a 287 (-1) during the third round, led by Gavin Shellnut’s 67 (-5). The senior out of Franklin, Tenn. accumulated five birdies and an eagle on his way to the second-lowest score in the field of 96 golfers.

Shellnut’s late surge (5-under par in his last seven holes) paved the way for UT Martin, as his day included an eagle on the par-5, 525-yard Hole No. 5.

Tyler Guy also shot under par for the Skyhawks today, finishing with a 70 (-2). Three of his four birdies came in his final six holes as he played bogey-free golf over his last 15 holes.

Hunter Richardson posted a 74 (+2) this morning, compiling a pair of birdies. Austin Swafford (76, +4) accounted for a pair of birdies today while Jack Story racked up four birdies before settling for a 77 (+5).

Richardson finished with the best overall score of any UT Martin golfer, placing 30th with a 215 (-1). Swafford (218, +2), Story (218, +2), Shellnut (219, +3) and Guy (219, +3) each finished within one shot of each other to round out the scoring for the Skyhawks.

“We didn’t finish quite as high as we wanted but it was a good start to the spring season,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We put ourselves in a hole at the start today but we came back in the end to pull ourselves back up. Gavin and Tyler really had good rounds today while our other three golfers steadied the ship. We have a few things we need to clean up but we took away several positives from this tournament – two of our three rounds were under par.”

The Skyhawks return to the links on March 12-14 when they host the Grover Page Classic. For the 11th straight year, the 54-hole tournament will be held at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
