GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team sits in second place with a pair of performers amongst the top-seven in the field after a remarkable first round in the Loyola Intercollegiate this afternoon.

After nearly an hour delay in the start time because of frost on the course, the Skyhawks pieced together a 280 (-8) while leading the tournament in par-4 scoring (3.86 average, -7). UT Martin trails only Eastern Michigan (-13) in the field of 16 teams.

“We had a good day today,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Everybody on our team got off to a good start – I think at one point, we had four players under-par and the other one was even-par. It was a very good effort – our guys have really worked hard and done a lot of preparation for this tournament.”

Leading the way for UT Martin today was senior Austin Swafford, who carded a 68 (-4) to rank fourth out of 96 golfers. The Lebanon, Tenn. native accounted for five birdies and 12 pars today, only committing one bogey on his way to a 34 on both the front- and back-nines.

Jack Story ranks seventh in the field after his first-round 69 (-3) today. The freshman piled up six birdies today, including four in a span of six holes on the back-nine. Hunter Richardson was responsible for four birdies in a row on Holes 2-5 before settling in with a 70 (-2) on his way to six birdies through 18 holes.

Tyler Guy and Gavin Shellnut rounded out the Skyhawks’ successful day with a 73 (+1) apiece. Guy was 3-under par through 12 holes while Shellnut played steady with two birdies and 13 pars on the day.

Round 2 of the three-day tournament begins with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. local time from the Palm Valley Golf Club.
