SKYHAWK EQUESTRIAN OPENS SPRING SEASON WITH PAIR OF TOUGH TESTS

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team began its spring season this weekend, falling 7-5 in an exhibition against Alabama on Friday before dropping a 17-2 decision to No. 4 Auburn on Saturday.
On Friday, Claire Ottinger highlighted the Skyhawk performances with an MOP in equitation on the flat, securing an 85 to also earn the team point. Ally Scholefield also picked up a pair of team points in Hunt Seat, tallying scores of 81 and 80. Randi LaChance (81) and Monica Zoromski (80) also emerged victorious in their head-to-head matchups for UT Martin.
Against Auburn, Zoromski and Brittany Woodard were each responsible for a team point for the Skyhawks. Zoromski defeated Hayley Iannotti with a 78 in equitation over fences while Woodard (66.5) posted an impressive head-to-head win over Kelsey Jung in horsemanship. Madeline Williams also battled to a draw in reining, tying Ali Fratessa with a score of 72.
Ottinger (lost 75-74 in equitation on the flat, lost 80-78 in equitation over fences) had a pair of slim setbacks against Auburn. UT Martin also had a trio of decisions (Williams lost 75-73.5, Liana Nowak lost 72.5-72, Jade Bleskey lost 71.5-71) come down to the wire in horsemanship. In reining, another three matchups (Nowak lost 71-69, Sammi Felts lost 65.5-64, Bobbie Piddock lost 66.5-66) were also close calls.
The Skyhawks return to action for their home finale on Friday, March 3 when they host Minnesota-Crookston. The competition will also serve as Senior Day for UT Martin, as Ottinger, Woodard and Margo Quinn will each be recognized for their career accomplishments.
