February 15, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team goes for its third consecutive win over Southeast Missouri when the Skyhawks visit the Show Me Center for a late morning Ohio Valley Conference tilt. Tipoff on Saturday, Feb. 18 is scheduled for 11 a.m.
UT Martin (18-10, 8-5 OVC) has won seven of its last nine games, shooting to the top of the OVC West division standings. The Skyhawks have held at least a partial share of the division lead since Feb. 4 in their chase for a second consecutive OVC West crown.
UT Martin will try for a season sweep of the Redhawks, following a 79-69 home win over Southeast Missouri on Jan. 14. In that game, the Skyhawks overcame a one-point halftime deficit by shooting 65.2 percent in the second half. Jacolby Mobley poured in a game-high 25 points to lead four UT Martin scorers in double-figures.
Last Saturday, the Skyhawks used another commanding performance by Javier Martinez to glide past SIUE by an 80-73 margin. The senior forward piled up his ninth double-double of the season (23 points, 15 rebounds) while Mobley added 21 points and a career-high six assists for a UT Martin squad that connected on 86.2 percent (25-for-29) of its free throw attempts.
Southeast Missouri (12-16, 7-6 OVC) entered the week just one game behind the Skyhawks in the OVC West standings. The Redhawks reeled off a four-game winning streak from Jan. 19 through Jan. 28 but have lost three out of their last four outings.
In a road split last weekend at SIUE and Eastern Illinois, Denzel Mahoney averaged 21.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game en route to his fourth adidas OVC Freshman of the Week award in the last five weeks. Mahoney, who scored a career-high 23 points against UT Martin earlier this season, leads the Redhawks with 16.5 points per game in conference play.
