SKYHAWK MEN'S HOOPS RETURNS HOME IN SEARCH OF THIRD STRAIGHT WIN IN EKU SERIES
February 2, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. - Coming off one of the best defensive performances in school history, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will look to keep its momentum rolling when it hosts the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Saturday, Feb. 4. The game will serve as the backend of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk women’s basketball team and will begin at approximately 6 p.m.
On Wednesday night, the Skyhawks (16-9, 6-4 Ohio Valley Conference) blitzed Tennessee Tech by a 75-46 margin behind a swarming defense. UT Martin limited the Golden Eagles to 31.1 percent shooting for the game, including a 15.6 percent (5-of-32) effort from three-point range. The 46 points allowed were the second-lowest scoring output by a Division-I opponent in program history.
In addition to a stout defense, Skyhawk senior Javier Martinez (22 points, 21 rebounds) also joined elite company at Tennessee Tech, becoming the first player in the school’s Division-I history (since 1992) to tally at least 20 points and 20 rebounds in a single game. He became only the 11th Division-I player to record a 20-20 performance in 2016-17, while his 21 rebounds are a single-game record in UT Martin’s Division-I era.
The Skyhawks have won two straight matchups against Eastern Kentucky, who is the only OVC opponent that UT Martin has not faced so far this season. Jacolby Mobley, the reigning OVC Player of the Week, supplied a team-high 18 points in last year’s 78-70 Skyhawk victory in Richmond.
Eastern Kentucky (10-15, 3-7 OVC) saw its two-game winning streak come to a close on Wednesday, falling at home by an 83-81 margin to Austin Peay in overtime. Asante Gist tossed in 24 points while Nick Mayo compiled 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Colonels, who played their fifth overtime game in 2016-17.
Mayo was an All-OVC first teamer as a freshman last year while Gist has won the OVC’s Freshman of the Week award five times this season. That duo makes up 51.9 percent of Eastern Kentucky’s scoring attack in conference play.
