LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team claimed two victories in singles play today but came up short in its spring debut at Louisville, 5-2.
Sarah Candeloro and Hitomi Naito both accounted for impressive wins in singles competition. Candeloro breezed through a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Louisville’s No. 1 player in Sena Suswam. Naito outlasted Abbie Pahz at No. 2 singles, turning in a 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 win.
"Sarah's and Hitomi's wins rank amongst the top singles victories in school history," UT Martin head coach Dennis Taylor said. "We had only practiced for two days on hard rubber courts and for those two to take down players of that caliber says a lot. Sarah's parents came in from Delaware and that was special for them to see. Hitomi was healthy for the first time in a while after battling a shoulder problem and her results speak for themselves."
The Skyhawks competed throughout in doubles but the host Cardinals were able to take the point. Andrea Plantada Cortes and Asel Jumamukhambetova fell by a 6-3 margin at No. 3 while Naito/Burcu Tari (No. 2) and Candeloro/Jemima Potter (No. 1) each put up a fight before falling 6-3.
At No. 5 singles, Plantada Cortes fell by a 6-1, 6-1 margin to Olivia Boesing. Elina Geut was defeated at No. 6 by Tiffany Huber (6-0, 6-2) while Potter fell 6-3, 6-1 to Mariana Humberg at No. 3. Tari also fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 against Alexandra Mally.
UT Martin returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 when it travels to in-state rival Middle Tennessee. First serve is set for 3 p.m. from Murfreesboro.
