SKYHAWK MEN'S BASKETBALL LOOKS TO EXTEND HOME SUCCESS AGAINST EASTERN ILLINOIS
January 17, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will go for its fourth consecutive home victory against Eastern Illinois when the two teams clash in an Ohio Valley Conference bout at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff on Thursday, Jan. 19 is set for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (12-8, 2-3 OVC) have not lost a home contest against the Panthers since Feb. 7, 2013, including an 87-84 overtime triumph last season. UT Martin has won exactly 80 percent of its home games (28-7) since the beginning of the 2014-15 season while its eight home victories this season are the most in the OVC.
Last Saturday, the Skyhawks posted a 79-69 OVC win against Southeast Missouri. UT Martin knocked down 65.2 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half while limiting the Redhawks to 29.2 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes to erase a 39-38 halftime deficit. Jacolby Mobley tied a career-high with 25 points while Kedar Edwards (17 points, six rebounds, five assists), Matthew Butler (13 points, five rebounds, six assists) and Javier Martinez (12 points on 6-of-7 shooting) each made significant contributions.
Eastern Illinois, who posted one of the OVC’s best nonconference wins of the season with a 67-64 win at Missouri on Dec. 17, is coming off a pair of home losses to Murray State (82-73) and Austin Peay (92-84) last week. Despite Saturday’s setback to Austin Peay, Demetrius McReynolds collected 32 points (on 13-of-18 shooting) to go along with 12 rebounds while Muusa Dama tallied his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Panthers (9-9, 1-4 OVC) rank 10th nationally in turnover margin (+4.9) and turnovers forced (17.28 per game) while also leading the OVC in scoring margin (+5.9), rebounding (38.2 per game) and steals (8.1 per game). Dama paces the league with 2.1 blocked shots per game while Terrell Lewis’ 2.8 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks as the best mark in the conference.
