The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to snap a pair of lengthy losing streaks against Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Tipoff from Lantz Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Skyhawks (4-14, 1-4 OVC) are looking to break out of its losing funk which has seen the squad drop four consecutive conference matchups – the longest such streak since the 2009-10 season. The squad will also attempt to pick up its first road victory in nine tries, dropping every road contest since Nov. 16, 2016 against Western Carolina.
UT Martin nearly broke loose of its losing streak against Southeast Missouri in its last contest, posting its largest scoring individual quarter of the season en route to an early 16-point advantage in the first half. The Skyhawks would watch its lead vanish in the second half despite posting a remarkable comeback attempt from a 14-point second half deficit before ultimately falling 82-79.
Junior forward Ashton Feldhaus proved to be a bright spot for the Skyhawks in the contest, scoring a career-high 20 points while tallying four assists and three rebounds off the bench. Feldhaus would be rewarded for her performance on Tuesday by being named adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season.
Eastern Illinois (5-13, 1-5 OVC) is also looking to snap a four-game losing streak in conference play after dropping a pair of contests last week to Murray State and Austin Peay. Serving as a bright spot for the Panthers is junior guard Grace Lennox who leads the team with 15.5 points, 4.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Meanwhile Allison Van Dyke (10.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg) recently notched her fourth OVC Freshman of the Week honor.
Wednesday’s contest marks the 48th meeting between the two programs dating back to the 1974-75 season. UT Martin holds a 30-17 series advantage including a nine-game winning streak against Eastern Illinois. The Panthers last picked up a victory in the series with a five-point home victory on Jan. 16, 2012.
