SKYHAWKS LOOK TO EXTEND SERIES WIN STREAK AGAINST OVC EAST RIVAL TENNESSEE STATE
January 5, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team strives to even its Ohio Valley Conference record when it pays a visit to Tennessee State in a weekend showdown at the Gentry Center on Saturday, Jan. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (11-7, 1-2 OVC) have emerged victorious in each of the last three meetings against the Tigers, having not lost against Tennessee State since Jan. 10, 2013. UT Martin has won by an average of 17.3 points per contest in that span, including a 72-56 triumph against the Tigers at the Elam Center last season.
This matchup pits half of the OVC’s four programs who achieved 20-plus victories in 2015-16 against each other. The Skyhawks (31) and the Tigers (30) rank first and second, respectively, in overall wins in the conference over the past two seasons.
UT Martin will look to bounce back from a setback at Belmont on Thursday evening. The Skyhawks withstood a 23-point second-half deficit to trail by just nine points with 7:33 remaining before ultimately falling by an 83-67 margin. Jacolby Mobley led the way with 22 points while Matthew Butler (15) and Fatodd Lewis (14) contributed with double-digit scoring efforts for UT Martin.
Tennessee State (10-5, 1-1 OVC) snapped a two-game losing streak on Thursday with a 65-62 home victory over Southeast Missouri. Tahjere McCall piled up 27 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for a squad that shot 50 percent from the field.
The Tigers lead the OVC in scoring defense (65.8 points per game) and defensive field goal percentage (.388) while Wayne Martin has snared a league-high 10.2 rebounds per contest. The battle-tested Tennessee State team fell by a 67-55 margin in overtime at NC State on Dec. 10 while falling by a slim 65-55 margin at No. 4 Duke just nine days later.
